Cohort Independent Studies Overview

 “Cohort” student's week includes:

  1. Cohort time (a Cohort is three IS teachers and approximately 3 -15 students), one time a week for three (3) hours with their Supervising Teacher. Cohort times are available Tuesday through Friday in three hour blocks. This time consists of the following:
    1. Co-Lab time: Essential Skills for the first hour (one elective credit earned per semester).
    2. Supervising Teacher/Student time, completing unit or end of semester assessments and school-wide assessments, reviewing school engagement/attendance and work completion and getting course work for the next week.
  2. New Cohort students will participate in a two hour Student Success course. (See Student Success information for details.)
  3. Students are enrolled in a Career Technical Education (CTE) course based on their personal choice, future career interests,  and if they need the credits for graduation. Students who start in the first three weeks of IS will attend one of our Career Technical Ed Courses, held on Tuesday/Thursday and Wed/Friday for a two hour block each day, four hours a week. If it is the student’s second year of study in the same CTE Pathway, they will participate in a Capstone course, a two hour block on Tuesday/Thursday for a two hour block each day, four hours a week (five credits earned per semester). Cohort students who start week four or more into the semester will participate in our CTE Introductory Course once a week (one credit earned per semester).
  4. Participating in all school-wide and state assessments as they are calendared. State-wide assessments will be administered outside of the three-hour Cohort time, while school-wide assessments are administered during the Cohort time by their Supervising Teacher.

CTE Pathways - In Aquaponics, students will learn to raise fish and plants together in one system. The fish waste provides a food source for the plants, and the plants filter the water for the fish. Auto Service and Repair is for the student who does not mind a little grease under their fingernails. The class will teach the basics of various mechanical systems such as brakes, transmissions and engines. Auto Body class will focus on learning about repairs and damage to the exterior and non-moving parts. They learn about restoring vehicles after minor or major collisions, repairing dents in the sheet metal, restoring paint and repainting to match factory colors, replacing bumpers, damaged body panels, and other components that are not part of the engine. Digital Media Arts - Digital media art combines art and technology in creative ways. Digital media artists help us visualize the world through graphic design, digital photo and video, animation, game design and much more. Welding- students will learn the basics of MIG, TIG and ARC welding. These skills can be used in various career fields such as automotive, construction and plumbing. The Vet Assisting class is for the animal enthusiast. Students will learn to provide support to the veterinary team by assisting with laboratory procedures such as vaccinations, drawing blood and proper handling of animals.
